Farewell, Nasty Gal! Nasty Gal Closed Shop Today

Farewell, Nasty Gal! Nasty Gal Closed Shop Today

And another one bites the dust. Nasty Gal, the brand for girl bosses everywhere, is DUNZO! When news broke earlier this month that Nasty Gal was acquired by UK e-tailer, Boohoo, following Nasty Gal’s ongoing bankruptcy, it didn’t take long for the going-out-of-business sales to start. Both storefronts in Santa Monica and West Hollywood shut their doors today, following the weekend’s storewide liquidations. Markdowns reached a whopping additional 70% off today only.

Despite the rain, we visited both shops earlier today. The store on Melrose Ave in West Hollywood still had a ton of merch, including Fenty x Puma by Rihanna sneakerboots (marked to $105 from $350) and pieces from the latest Love, Courtney Courtney Love x Nasty Gal collection. However, the bigger store at Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica was much more picked over, but still had a few gems left, like Quay sunglasses for as low as $3!

Although the stores are now closed, the clearance sale continues online. For how long? We don’t know. Selection is going fast! Farewell, Nasty Gal. It was fun while it lasted.

Kenzo x H&M Lands at Beverly Center Today!

Kenzo x H&M Lands at Beverly Center Today!

Hello, Fashion Fiends! We were kind of on the fence about this collaboration. For sure, we heart Kenzo and everything but do we really need another fast fashion “limited edition” collection? Like, there’s SO many now. So we didn’t camp out or show up at the mall at the break of dawn, but we did stroll into the Beverly Center H&M store about a quarter past 10AM (more than 2 whole hours AFTER H&M opened for the launch), and surprisingly (or maybe not surprisingly), we found pretty much everything still available in a plethora of sizes – the womens and mens clothing, bags, accessories, hats, socks, sunglasses, slippers, shoes, and most importantly, the iconic sweatshirts and t-shirts were STILL THERE. This is quite the opposite of what happened in the wee early hours this morning when the H&M website crashed at the start of the launch. There were only about 5 people checking out the collection this morning in the store when we were there. So, in all, it was pretty quiet.

Keep in mind that much of this collection is unisex, and the sizes run about a size smaller. So don’t be surprised if only a few (or none) of the larger sizes are left. And yes the prices are a bit steep for H&M but does that surprise anyone anymore? Hello, the Balmain and Isabel Marant collaborations weren’t bargain basement either! We were impressed by the quality of this collection though, so the high prices may be justified this time. If you haven’t shopped the collection yet and are jones-ing for some pieces, we suggest you go soon for better selection etc.

Is This the End of Extreme Couponing at Victoria’s Secret?

Is This the End of Extreme Couponing at Victoria’s Secret?

Back in April, Victoria’s Secret announced that it would no longer sell swimwear and that it would no longer distribute catalogs or mail-out coupons. Those are two of the major changes VS would be making in the light of its switch in leadership which occurred last February, when CEO Sharen Turney stepped down and the former CEO and current head of L Brands (owner of VS), Les Wexner, took over. Their focus now would be in 3 major categories – bras, activewear and beauty, and their marketing would be mainly digital. In response to this news, social media has been going nuts with rumors and speculation as to what exactly this means for VS’ loyal fanbase, and more specifically the couponing community.

As of this writing, a quick search on Instagram for #victoriassecret yields just under 3 million posts, and that’s not including searches of its spin-off tags, #vspink or #pinknation, that also pull up hundreds of thousands of posts each. Any VS or VS Pink fanatic worth her weight in panties regularly checks these posts, and the Facebook pages of VS and the growing number of VS fan groups, as well as Twitter. These posts and pages offer the best VS hacks and are couponing gold. You can get the best tips for shopping the semi-annual sale (SAS), like buy early and then save your receipts to get a price adjustment when the prices drop 2-3 weeks later because THE PRICES ALWAYS GO LOWER. The best tip is, usually after a month into the SAS, all bras and sleepwear drop to $14.99! That’s often times better than their outlet prices!

VS Semi-Annual Sale!

VS Semi-Annual Sale!

You learn quickly that it’s important to sign up for the VS mailing list to gain access to VS coupons, promos and offers. Some truly enterprising couponers have figured out how to sign up under multiple accounts (maybe recruit your mom, sister and husband too!) so they receive multiple coupons, like the coveted $10 or $15 birthday coupons (or HBD), which they in turn sell or swap on Instagram. Same goes for VS Secret Reward Cards, which many mail out for (no purchase necessary) and then turn around and sell/swap. It’s a win/win because buyers can score hauls worth $100’s in merchandise for a fraction of the cost by buying these discounted coupons and using them during optimal promotion periods. More tips on social media steer shoppers to the “less strict” stores that allow you to stack multiple coupons or combine promos, when the fine print says stacking and combining of offers are not allowed. We learned on Instagram that “YMMV” means “Your Mileage May Vary” from store to store.

Free panty just for downloading the Pink app!

Free panty just for downloading the Pink app!

Some times you don’t need to spend a penny at VS to score something because even the freebies and promos VS offers are money-makers, and we don’t just mean the free panty coupons. Last February during Superbowl weekend, you could get a FREE, limited edition pink mini VS football just for trying on a sport bra, and yep, these little footballs were selling like hotcakes on Instagram and Mercari, a beta shopping app. Last April, VS offered “Mystery Game” pieces with no purchase necessary. You just had to go to a participating store and ask for it, and you would win either a panty, perfume mist, bra or sport pant. Absolutely NO PURCHASE NECESSARY and you would get FREE stuff! Earlier this month, which happens to be “Bombshell” month (named after VS’ top-selling fragrance), VS partnered with Quikly to do a series of weekly giveaways all month long. The finale giveaway was for a FREE bottle of VS’ limited edition Bombshell “Lux Eau De Parfum”, which comes covered in Swarovski crystals and encased in a glossy, black lacquer box with lock and key, retail $250.

All that is just a sampling of the promotions and giveaways that seem to go on almost weekly year-round at VS stores, or it was. With all recent the changes, there’s a fear that VS will be doing away with all these generous freebies and discounts. It’s not surprising though, as VS has since laid off about 200 employees and these promotions and giveaways cost the company millions. So what exactly does this mean for VS and its ever-growing population of addicts and couponers alike? Only time and social media will tell.

Sports Authority on Pico Blvd is DUNZO

Sports Authority on Pico Blvd is DUNZO

No doubt there’s been a steady-growing enthusiasm in fitness classes and seemingly endless trends in athleisure. However, it hasn’t stopped Sports Authority, the chain sport and athletics purveyor, from filing for bankruptcy and closing 140 stores, including the Woodland Hills, Mid-City and West LA ones.

We stopped by the store in Mid-City on Pico Blvd on Saturday where its storewide liquidation had already begun some time ago. The entire store, fixtures and all, is marked 30-60% off. All stock is out. All clearance apparel (anything with prices ending in .47 or .97)  is now an additional 40% off, while all regular priced apparel is an additional 30% off. There are only a few brands available, mostly Champion, Under Armour or Bloom, with a few Nike and Adidas items sprinkled throughout.

There weren’t a lot of shoes left when we were there. There were about 4 tables out for men, women and kids, and all marked 30% off. For women’s, there were mostly size 9’s left and a couple of size 8’s. We spotted a single pair of fuschia/blue Asics size 7.5, priced at $99.98, plus 30% off.

We’re told the store will remain open until “some time in June”, but we wouldn’t be surprised if all sold by Memorial Day weekend.

Sports Authority, 4550 W Pico Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90019. Last day is some day in June.
